The Power of the Language of Art - AchieveKids 3rd Annual Art Show Will Enchant!

Fri Oct 17, 2008 8:41pm EDT
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
Ever wonder how art can transform lives? The AchieveKids 3rd
Annual Art Show can show you how even kids with the greatest
difficulty in communications can speak with eloquence through their
art. Set for Friday, October 24th, at the Decathelon Club in Santa
Clara, this annual event has been a great success in past years and
again promises to thrill, inspire and enlighten for all. A&D
(andonline.com) is sponsoring the Art Show and the AchieveKids Art
Program. A&D's corporate commitment to our immediate community and
education is an example of how many corporations support philanthropy
in their geographic area throughout the United States.

AchieveKids is an organization teaching youth with complex
emotional and developmental disabilities the skills and knowledge
necessary to achieve greater independence. "Art is a central part of
the Special Education curriculum," notes Michael Gennette, the
Executive Director of AchieveKids. "And the annual Art Show serves as
a gateway for community outreach as well as self-expression for the
young artists. This self-expression empowers our students and with
that confidence they can tell their stories and share their feelings."

   About AchieveKids

For almost 50 years AchieveKids has offered a place where
acceptance is the key to being welcomed into the community. With two
locations in Palo Alto and East San Jose, AchieveKids has been serving
Bay Area children, aged 5 to 22, with emotional and/or developmental
disabilities including mental retardation, autistic spectrum disorder,
mood, disruptive behavior, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. Our
approach is to address the child, not the diagnosis. We acknowledge it
is not always easy, but we know that today's difficulties are
tomorrow's opportunities for success. Slowly building their
self-esteem the students learn to take chances. Trying leads to
success and success leads to hope for a future of inclusion.

AchieveKids is the largest non-public school serving students with
moderate to severe disorders in Santa Clara County.

Plot exposes fissure in U.S. intelligence community

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Last week's failed plot to bomb a U.S. passenger jet has exposed lingering fissures within the U.S. intelligence community, which had information from interviews and clandestine intercepts but did not put the pieces together, officials said.
