The 38th annual Bumbershoot: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival, Presented by
Samsung Mobile announces the partial 2008 lineup. The 3-day urban event takes
place Labor Day Weekend (August 30 - September 1). The Festival stretches

Needle, and programs 20 indoor and unique outdoor venues. This progressive
Festival features a diverse array of arts including live music, comedy,
theatre, dance, film, urban crafts, and literary and visual arts. Complete
Festival details are located at bumbershoot.org.

    LITERARY ARTS

Bumbershoot's Literary Arts program has seen tremendous audience growth in
the past few years, which coincides with Seattle's burgeoning national
reputation
as the place for books and live events ("Book Lovers Ask, What's Seattle's
Secret?" -- NYT, 3/9/08). This year the program will feature graphic novelists
Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine, sci-fi legend William Gibson, a special edition of
Starlee Kine and Arthur Jones' Post-It Note Reading Series, authors Nathan
McCall, Francesca Lia-Block, Kevin Sessums, and other delicious things we will
reveal in the coming months.

    DANCE AND PERFORMANCE

Bumbershoot is proud to present a brand new collaboration between San
Francisco-based choreographer Joe Goode and New York-based puppeteer Basil
Twist. The show, called "Wonderboy," exhibits Goode's distinctive blend of
dance and theatre. It will debut this summer at San Francisco's Yerba
BuenaCenter for the Performing Arts and then travel to Bumbershoot. The dance
and
performance programs will also include Pacific Northwest Ballet and a slate
of other regional and national performance companies.

    VISUAL ARTS

"These exhibits are out to get you," wrote Regina Hackett in the Seattle
Post-Intelligencer last year, and this year's visual arts will be equally as
compelling. The Gage Academy will host a 3-day Drawing Jam, where
Festival-goers will get a taste of the classical art studio. Marita Holdaway of
Benham Gallery has curated a monumental photo and multimedia exhibit called "The
Power of One," which will explore the ways individuals make an impact in
society, be
it war, peace, environment, and other contexts. Last year's hit graphic design
show (The Seattle-Havana Poster Show, now installed in the National Gallery in
Havana) has been reprised -- the brand-new Seattle-Tehran Poster Show will
showcase some of Iran's top graphic artists. The Henry Art Gallery is back
bigger than last year, with an exhibit of local and national contemporary
video work, including work by performance artists Grand Openings of New
York. With a wide palette of Arts on display, Bumbershoot will also take a
look at artistic taste with a special "One Pot" residency and exhibit
(complete with some wonderfully themed meals), curated by Michael Hebberoy. More
additions will be announced in the months to come.

    SPECTACLE & INSTALLATION

Bumbershoot's penchant for playful performance continues with acts of
installation and spectacle from near and far. Strange Fruit, a performing arts
company hailing from Melbourne, Australia, will fuse theatre, dance and circus,
perched atop 12-foot poles that bend and sway in choreographed elegance. A bit
closer
to home (and the ground), will be an outdoor table as part of the One Pot
residency, site-specific work by regional artists, and more spectacular sights
to
be announced soon.

    COMEDY

When we expanded our comedy program to three stages last year, we wondered
if we
were crazy. Apparently not -- all three venues, including the new Northwest
comedy stage at the Vera Project, were huge crowd favorites, each featuring
the freshest comedians from around the nation and here at home. The three
stages will return in 2008 with a complete comic lineup to be announced this
summer.

    1 REEL FILM FESTIVAL

Now in its 13th edition, the 1 Reel Film Festival presents the year's best
film shorts from around the world. Curated by the renowned Seattle International
Film Festival (SIFF) -- the largest and most highly-attended film festival in
the United
States -- the 1 Reel Film Festival will feature live-action, animated,
experimental, and documentary short films; and music videos from regional,
national, and international filmmakers. Themed one-hour programs will include
films for families, films about food, films from Iran, and favorites from the
2008 SIFF. Whether you're a film aficionado or simply curious, the 1 Reel Film
Festival has something for you.

    FLATSTOCK

The American Poster Institute's Flatstock returns for its sixth reigning
year at
Bumbershoot and historically is a haven for music and art fans alike. Poster
artists from around the country convene during the Festival to display their
diverse collection of rock-inspired art, and provide collectors the opportunity
to meet the artists and pick up an affordable limited edition piece to take
home.

    THEATRE

Tucked inside the Center House is an intimate black box theater, which at
Bumbershoot becomes home to some of our best Northwest theatre performers and
companies. In the past these have included Lauren Weedman, Sarah Rudinoff,
Annex Theatre, and the Neutrino Project. Co-curated by Theatre Puget Sound
(TPS),
the "TPS Stage" will host three exceptional days of regional theatre. TPS
nurtures a healthy and vibrant theatre community, develops strong ties among the
region's theatre professionals and raises visibility of this region's theatre
scene at the local, national, and international levels. A complete 2008
theatre program will be announced this summer.
