Fred Meyer Asks Customers to Check Refrigerators and Freezers for Recalled Beef

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Meyer stores are asking
customers to check for ground beef they may have recently purchased that is
part of a recall announced by Nebraska Beef. None of this ground beef is
currently available for sale in Fred Meyer stores.
    Fred Meyer was informed today that some of its ground beef may be
contaminated with E. coli due to the recall by Nebraska Beef.  Consumer safety
is a top priority at Fred Meyer and the retailer is encouraging customers to
check their refrigerators and freezers for ground beef packages with "sell by"
dates of July 6 through August 11 and labels that read: "Lean Ground Beef
Family Pack Not To Exceed 20% Fat."  Customers should return them to stores
for a full refund or replacement.
    Fred Meyer stores have placed signs with specific information in their
meat departments to notify customers.  Fred Meyer operates 129 stores in
Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska.
    Consumers are reminded that proper handling, storage and cooking of ground
beef offer the best protection against food-borne illness.  According to the
USDA, when ground beef is thoroughly cooked to an internal temperature of at
least 160 degrees, any harmful bacteria are destroyed and the ground beef is
safe to consume.
