MIAMI, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The internal enforcement of
immigration laws has increased significantly in the past years and Miami, one
of the nation's leading cities in immigration advocacy for its increasing
immigrant population, is the ideal venue to bring together the immigration
community to uncover the various issues facing immigration experts in their
legal practice.
The Intercultural Human Rights Law Review at St. Thomas University School of
Law will host its annual symposium entitled "U.S. Immigration Detention:
Policy andProcedure from a Human Rights Perspective" to be held on November 6,
2009 at St. Thomas University School of Law, Moot Court Room. This year's
symposium, which is open to the general public, will bring together scholars
and immigration experts, amongst the most respected in the United States, to
discuss their research, findings and experiences in immigration law and human
rights policy.
Panels will highlight the complex challenges facing immigration professionals
in their legal practice. The symposium will initiate with a discussion of a
historical and comparative approach to detention in order to familiarize the
public with the origins of how the use of detention has become a tool to
secure the borders and remove undocumented aliens from the United States.
Several issues will be examined, such as the indefinite detention in light of
the permissible length of post-removal period detention of deportable aliens,
and the presentation of scholars' researches and findings concerning the
conditions of some detention facilities in the United States. The discussion
will finalize with exploring the procedural safeguards available to avoid
arbitrary detentions.
The event will commence at 9:00 a.m. and culminate with a cocktail reception
