New partnership with Codonics to provide bar code-assisted syringe labeling for
safe drug preparation and administration
NEEDHAM, Mass.--(Business Wire)--
iMDsoft®, a global leader in clinical information systems for perioperative,
critical, and acute care, and Codonics of Middleburg Heights, OH, a leading
provider of image distribution solutions for the medical industry, have
announced an agreement that will complement iMDsoft`s anesthesia solution with
an innovative syringe labeling system. The system will be fully integrated with
the MetaVision® Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS).
Medication administration in anesthesia presents significant patient safety
challenges. As a result, numerous regulatory bodies offer guidelines for
medication labeling. Codonics` Smart Label System, a work-in-progress, when
combined with MetaVision, assists in filling the regulatory need by helping
ensure compliance with these standards, while improving workflow, efficiency,
and accuracy.
The system automates the syringe preparation workflow so that fully compliant
labels are printed while the syringe is being filled. The Smart Label system
starts by reading the NDC barcode on the vial. The integrated printer then
produces full-color labels that comply with the 2010 National Safety Patient
Goals of The Joint Commission (TJC) and American Society of Anesthesiologists
(ASA) Guidelines. The system provides innovative safety features, such as visual
and audible confirmation of each drug name and concentration, as well as
clinical alerts for recalled and other non-usable drugs. The printing system
integrates seamlessly with the MetaVision AIMS, which records drug
administration and reduces medical errors by issuing notifications of events,
such as expired syringes or syringe swaps.
While the Smart Label system is currently designed with US safety guidelines in
mind, iMDsoft and Codonics are working together to provide systems that satisfy
European and Asian guidelines as well.
"iMDsoft is committed to improving patient safety through technology, and the
integration of this new system with MetaVision marks another important step
forward" said Steve Sperrazza, VP of Sales, North America, iMDsoft. "We are
delighted to be able to leverage Codonics` 25 years of experience in designing
medical devices to bring a cutting-edge solution to our customers."
"The iMDsoft MetaVision suite of products is a state-of-the-art solution for
perioperative care. Codonics is very excited to partner with iMDsoft to take
anesthesia care to the next level by enhancing the workflow and improving
patient safety through the integration of the Smart Label System. The Smart
Label System links medication preparation and administration via the MetaVision
suite to provide an automated workflow, which includes medication documentation,
warnings, and event notifications." said Gary Keefe, VP of New Product
Development, Codonics. "We look forward to our partnership with iMDsoft and
offering a complete anesthesia solution."
