Anonymous Donation Made to the Karen Ann Resource Education Foundation

Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:07pm EDT
CHANHASSEN, Minn., June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- An anonymous donation in the
amount of $5,000.00 was made to the Karen Ann Resource Education Foundation
this week. The money has been slated to help two Slidell, La., secondary
schools buy library books. Slidell High School and Salmen High School were
damaged in Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. They are endeavoring to
rebuild their libraries.
Librarian Carol Stephens of Slidell High School was "thrilled" with the
news that her school would be benefiting from the KARE Foundation donation.
"We are very excited to be getting this donation for our students," Stephens
said.
About Karen Ann Resource Education Foundation
The Karen Ann Resource Education Foundation was established in February
2006 to provide library books and/or grants to K-12 schools in areas damaged
and/or affected by natural disasters in the United States. "My mother, Karen,
provided books for my school when I was a student," explained KARE Foundation
Founder and Executive Director Christina Larkin, "and that had a great impact
on my classmates and me." After being transferred from a large high school to
a small private school, Larkin was surprised to find the school lacking in
reading material. "The school did not have a library, so my mom collected 500
books from friends and family to start one." Since Karen's death, Larkin has
been accepting funds to continue building libraries across America.
Any school affected by a natural disaster can apply to the KARE Foundation
for assistance. The KARE Foundation Board verifies the need. Once the need is
verified, the Board then works with the school's staff and/or librarian to
collect books and other materials appropriate for the school and its students.
