SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
Affymetrix, Inc., (Nasdaq: AFFX) today announced that its Chief Medical Officer,
Dr. Rick Hockett, will address the topic of `Personalized Medicine: Planning for
the Future` at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science (AAAS) and the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) on June 1 in
Washington, DC.
Dr. Hockett will speak in a panel discussion at 10:15 AM Eastern time on `State
of the Science: Connecting Biomarkers and Diagnostics.` The panel will be
chaired by Teri Manolio, Director of the Office of Population Genomics, at the
National Institutes of Health. It will also include Leigh Anderson, CEO of the
Plasma Proteome Institute, and David Borsook, Co-Director of the Imaging
Consortium for Drug Development at McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA.
"Identifying biomarkers which increase the benefit-to-risk-ratio for medications
allows doctors to provide more meaningful health outcomes for patients," said
Dr. Hockett. "One of the first examples of personalized medicine began when
doctors utilized glucose measurements to diagnose diabetes and prescribe
insulin. There are still many challenges ahead to developing similarly effective
therapies for more complex diseases such as cancer. I am looking forward to
discussing these and identifying a path forward with such distinguished
colleagues."
Before joining Affymetrix in March of this year, Dr. Hockett served as Medical
Fellow and the Director of Genomic Medicine at Eli Lilly. Earlier he spent seven
years on staff at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, with the
positions of Assistant Professor of Pathology and Head of Clinical Immunology
and Molecular Diagnostics.
This colloquium is free and open to the public. It will be held at the AAAS
Headquarters, 1200 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC. For more information
