U.S. share of market remained steady at 10.3% ($38.6B) in 2008
WASHINGTON--(Business Wire)--
Newly released data from the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association
(OIDA) shows that the U.S. market share for optoelectronics remained steady at
10.3% in 2008. Michael Lebby, CEO and President, noted that the United States
remained in 4th place behind Japan (30.5%), Taiwan (22.4%), and South Korea
(17.5%).
OIDA is monitoring the impact of China, where the majority of OIDA members are
manufacturing their products. China is currently in 5th place, with 7.5% market
share, and is forecasted to surpass the U.S. in 2014. "We see that Asia
dominated the optoelectronics industry in 2008, with over 80% of the market
share," Lebby said. "This figure is expected to climb to 82%, or over $400
billion, by 2020."
"These numbers represent a huge challenge for the U.S. optoelectronics industry
as increasingly more products utilize optoelectronics in their design and
function," Lebby added. "The most exciting segment of the U.S. optoelectronics
industry is still the optical fiber communications segment, which the U.S. led
with a market share of 34%, or $7.5 billion, in 2008."
