Research and Markets: Shire Spends over Us$8 Billion on Acquisitions in the Last Five YearsDUBLIN, Ireland--(Business Wire)--Research and Markets

(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c75770) has announced theaddition of "Shire: Pipeline - Products - Performance - Potential" totheir offering. Shire is a leading specialty pharmaceutical company traditionallyfocused on the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

(ADHD) and gastrointestinal disorders. In 2005, Shire completed theacquisition of Transkaryotic Therapies, broadening the company's focusinto the treatment of genetic and renal diseases. In 2007, Shirepurchased New River Pharmaceuticals leading to a significant expansionof Shire's ADHD product portfolio and pipeline. The company'sheadquarters are based in the UK, however, during its 20 years ofoperation, Shire has established a significant presence throughoutEurope and in the US. In the last five years, Shire has spent over US$8 billion onacquisitions which have seen the company considerably expand itsglobal presence and areas of interest. Most importantly, theseacquisitions have added four key products to a portfolio that wasbecoming dated and facing threats to its intellectual property. Theaddition of Vyvanse (from New River Pharmaceuticals) will help furthercement the company's position as a leader in the treatment ofattention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; traditionally Shire'sstrongest field). Meanwhile, the additions of Replagal and Elaprase

(both from Transkaryotic Therapeutics) have expanded Shire's specialtycentred business into the treatment of genetic diseases. Furthermore,Dynepo (also from TKT) has recently been launched and sees Shire enterthe field of renal diseases. During 2006, Shire reached a key settlement with BarrPharmaceuticals. The two companies had been involved in patentlitigation over Adderall XR, Shire's top-selling product, which haspatent protection until 2019. The agreement between the two companiesallows Barr to launch its generic Adderall XR product ten years priorto patent expiry, however, it should prevent further patent challengesand limit generic competition until 2019. A key component of thisagreement was the granting of a licence to Shire to begin developingDuramed Pharmaceuticals' (a subsidiary of Barr) new oralcontraceptive, Seasonique, as well as five other products, whichutilise Duramed's transvaginal ring technology. With this licence,Shire could begin to move into yet another new key area of interest, women's health, further expanding what was previously a very limitedproduct portfolio.
