PARIS, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Alstom (ALSO.PA) is set to sign on Tuesday a firm contract for French rail operator SNCF to buy 100 trains, in a deal that could eventually lead to the purchase of up to 1,000 regional trains, an SNCF spokesman said.

SNCF president Guillaume Pepy and Alstom's chief executive Patrick Kron will sign the deal tomorrow at 1530 GMT.

A source close to the deal said the firm order for 100 trains was worth just under 1 billion euros ($1.5 billion), a figure that neither Alstom nor SNCF would comment on. (Reporting by Benjamin Mallet; Writing by Helen Massy-Beresford)
