Indians' Cabrera completes rare unassisted triple play
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cleveland Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera turned a rare unassisted triple play on Monday, recording all three outs in the fifth inning of a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
It marked only the 14th unassisted triple play in the Major Leagues, the last occurring in 2007.
Cabrera made a diving catch of a ball hit by Toronto's Lyle Overbay for one out. He stepped on second base to retire Kevin Mench who was running on the play, then tagged Marco Scutaro, who was running from first, for the third out.
"As soon as they both took off for the double steal and he (Overbay) hit a line drive, I knew I had a chance for a triple play," Cabrera told reporters through an interpreter.
The play came in the second game of a doubleheader which lasted 10 innings. Cleveland won the first game 3-0.
