Phillies win NL East title on final day
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Philadelphia Phillies won the National League East title when they defeated the Washington Nationals 6-1 on the final day of the regular season on Sunday.
The win, coupled with the New York Mets' 8-1 loss to the Florida Marlins, put the Phillies in the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
The Phillies and Mets entered Sunday's play tied for the NL East lead, but the Mets gave up seven runs in the first inning en route to the season-ending loss to the Marlins.
New York had led the division by seven games on September 12.
