Rangers sign Naslund, Jagr to move on
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Rangers signed Vancouver forward Markus Naslund in a move which will end Jaromir Jagr's stay with the team, The New York Times said on Thursday.
Naslund agreed a two-year deal worth $8 million as the Rangers ran out of patience waiting for Jagr's decision about whether to stay.
Rangers general manager Glen Sather told the New York Times the team could not afford to wait for Jagr any longer.
"I think he was terrific," Sather said. "He played hard. He was our offensive leader on the team and the feeling was any time he was on the ice he could take over a game."
Jagr, 35, was traded to the Rangers in 2004. He played three full seasons for them, including 2005-06 when he scored 123 points and finished second in the Hart Trophy voting.
Naslund, 34, scored 55 points last season.
