Rockies register record recovery to edge Marlins 18-17

DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) - The Colorado Rockies scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete a record-breaking 18-17 home victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday.

Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta had the game-winning walk-off single, helping his team finish off an improbable rally from 13-4 down as Colorado set a new team record by overturning the nine-run deficit.

Garrett Atkins had the game-tying single for the Rockies, and recorded five hits in the game.

The Marlins jumped all over Colorado with five runs in the first inning before added six more in the fourth to put the Rockies in the nine-run hole.

Iannetta's three-run homer in the fifth got his team going. Left fielder Matt Holliday, also homered in the inning and had five RBIs.

Center fielder Cody Ross added five RBIs for the Marlins. His two RBI single in the seventh, led to a four-run inning for Florida.

Colorado put up four runs of their own in the bottom half of the same frame to cut the Marlins' lead to 17-16.

The two teams combined for 43 hits, and used 14 different pitchers in what amounted to a memorable Independence Day of baseball.
