DeRosa's fifth hit keeps Cubs ahead in Central
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Mark DeRosa capped a ninth-inning rally with his fifth hit of the game to help the Chicago Cubs retain first place in the National League Central Division with a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
DeRosa broke a 6-6 tie with the hit that glanced off Reds pitcher David Weather's glove and allowed pinch runner Sam Fuld to reach home and keep the Cubs one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, DeRosa's winning hit followed a two-run triple by Aramis Ramirez that pulled the Cubs even with the Reds.
"There's just no quit in this team," DeRosa told reporters after his 5-for-5 performance.
Chicago enjoyed a 3-1 lead after DeRosa's solo homer in the third inning but the Reds went up 4-3 two innings later on Adam Dunn's fielder's choice.
Jacque Jones's single enabled the Cubs to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth.
Cincinnati then moved 6-4 ahead in the sixth on Jeff Keppinger's run-scoring double and an RBI single by Ken Griffey Jr.
Knowing Milwaukee had already beaten Houston, Ryan Theriot opened the bottom of the ninth with a walk for Chicago and Derrek Lee singled to bring up Ramirez.
His triple rolled to the wall, allowing Theriot and Lee to score to give the Cubs a chance for the win, which DeRosa delivered.
*Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo pitched eight effective innings and Corey Hart drove in two runs with a first-inning double as the Brewers shut out Houston 6-0 for their third straight win.
*Khalil Greene's two-run homer in the fourth inning led the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, pulling the Padres within one game of Arizona in the National League West.
*Randy Winn and Pedro Feliz homered in a five-run eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants surprised the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5.
