Myanmar junta admits one dead in protest crackdown

YANGON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Myanmar's ruling generals admitted on Thursday one protester was killed and three were wounded in a harsh crackdown on anti-government protests in Yangon.

Protest leaders said at least five monks were killed.

State-owned media said two police officers were also wounded in Wednesday's crackdown on protesters who defied warning shots, tear gas and baton charges meant to quell the biggest anti-junta protests in 20 years.

Protest leaders speaking on the Myanmar-language services of foreign broadcasters said at least five monks were killed and they urged the monks to continue their marches.
