Thai Airways to buy Rolls Royce engines for $500 mln

BANGKOK, May 14 (Reuters) - Thai Airways International THAI.BK said on Wednesday it planned to spend more than $500 million to purchase Rolls-Royce engines (RR.L) for its six Airbus A-380 (EAD.PA) passenger planes.

The purchase of the 24 engines included a 15-year maintenance contract with the British engine maker, Thai Airways President Apinan Sumanaseni told reporters.

The carrier expects to take delivery of up to 4 A380s, the world's largest passenger jet, in 2010 and the rest in 2011, he said.

Shares in Thai Airways rose 2.86 percent to 27 baht on Wednesday, while the main Thai stock index .SETI 1.15 percent higher. ($1=32.47 Baht) (Reporting by Manunphattr Dhanananphorn; Writing by Viparat Jantraprap; Editing by Darren Schuettler)
