Indian shares open down, then turn positive

MUMBAI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - India's main stock index opened 0.09 percent down on Thursday, but recovered quickly with HDFC Bank (HDBK.BO) and its parent Housing development Finance Corp (HDFC.BO) leading the gains.

At 9:57 a.m. (0427 GMT), the 30-share index .BSESN was up 0.43 percent, or 77.10 points, at 17,903.09, with 22 components rising. It had fallen as much 0.21 percent earlier.

The broader NSE index rose 0.40 percent to 5,289.55. (Reporting by Devidutta Tripathy)
