Indian shares open 0.25 pct down ahead of budget

MUMBAI, Feb 29 (Reuters) - Indian shares started 0.25 percent lower on Friday, tracking a drop in overseas markets and led lower by Housing Development Finance Corp (HDFC.BO), ahead of the annual budget due at 11 a.m. (0530 GMT).

At 9:55 a.m. (0425 GMT), the 30-share BSE index .BSESN was down 44.94 points at 17,779.54.

The 50-issue NSE index was down 0.48 percent at 5,259.85. (Reporting by Hiral Vora; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)
