Dec 2 (Reuters) - OmniVision Technologies Inc (OVTI.O) swung to a second-quarter loss, hurt by slowing demand, and sees third-quarter results way below Wall Street targets, sending its shares down as much as 12 percent in after-hours trade.

For the second quarter, the company's loss was 5.3 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with net income of $20.5 million, or 36 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

Excluding a goodwill impairment charge, the company, which makes semiconductor image sensors, posted earnings of 4 cents a share that fell short of analysts' estimates by a penny.

Revenue fell 30 percent to $163.9 million. Analysts were expecting revenue of 165.4 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

Chief Executive Officer Shaw Hong said in a conference call that the image sensor market was hurt by the current economic slowdown, leading to a big drop in demand throughout the industry.

For the third quarter, OmniVision expects a loss of 9 cents to 22 cents a share on sales of $80 million to $100 million.

Analysts are expecting a loss of 1 cent a share, excluding special items, on revenue of 151.7 million.

Shares of the company fell to $4.80 in trading after the bell. They closed at $5.48 Tuesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Shrutika Verma in Bangalore; Editing by Anil D'Silva)
