Sept 8 (Reuters) - BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc (BPAX.O) said a mid-stage trial of its triple-hormone oral contraceptive Pill-Plus was positive and indicated increased sex drive in women, sending its shares up 14 percent.

The Pill-Plus aims to prevent pregnancy and at the same time restore the loss of sexual desire seen in women on oral contraceptives that generally contain female sex hormones estrogen and a form of progesterone.

This drug contains the two female hormones and a third hormone, an androgen, similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone can help restore the loss of sex drive in women.

In this trial, the addition of an oral androgen resulted in restoration of testosterone levels to the normal range for healthy women.

Pill-Plus is also being developed as a once-daily skin patch.

Shares of Lincolnshire, Illinois based BioSante were trading at $5.45 before the bell. They closed at $4.76 Friday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Varsha Tickoo in Bangalore)
