Nov 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Bancorp (USB.N), which has had a strategy of small acquisitions for years, would look at large acquisitions "opportunistically," its Chief Financial Officer Andrew Cecere told the Wall Street Journal in an interview.

Cecere would not confirm reports last month that the bank had bid for Midwest regional bank National City Corp NCC.N, which later accepted a takeover offer from PNC Financial Services Group Inc (PNC.N), the paper said.

The Minneapolis-based bank, one of the 10 largest U.S. banks, doesn't need a deal to compete, Cecere told the paper.

"We are absolutely of sufficient size to effectively compete," Cecere said. "We have the products, we have the customer base, we have the scale."

Cecere told the paper that the company's lack of a high profile relative to its size could be due its location and its lack of presence on the U.S. east coast. (Reporting by Ajay Kamalakaran in Bangalore)
