UPDATE 1-Global Q3 chip sales rise 19.7 pct sequentially - SIA
* Says '09 sales to beat mid-year forecast
* Q3 chip sales at $61.9 bln; Sept sales rise 8.2 pct
* Says PC, cell phone sales ahead of forecasts
Nov 2 (Reuters) - Global semiconductor sales rose 19.7 percent sequentially during the third quarter and beat estimates, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said and forecast an upbeat full-year sales.
For the quarter ended Sept. 30, semiconductor sales rose to $61.9 billion from $51.7 billion in the prior quarter.
"September sales were in line with historical patterns, reflecting increased demand from end-users as they began the build for the holiday season," SIA said in a statement.
According to SIA, unit sales of personal computers and cell phones -- the two largest demand drivers for semiconductors -- continue to run ahead of earlier forecasts.
"Sales are running well ahead of the worst-case scenarios projected early in the year, and we are optimistic that total sales for 2009 will be better than our mid-year forecast," SIA said.
Also, the demand for semiconductors for industrial applications -- a sector that had declined sharply -- showed initial signs of recovery, SIA said.
Chip sales in September were $20.1 billion, up 8.2 percent from August. However, the third-quarter sales were 10 percent lower than the $68.9 billion reported for the same period of 2008, the industry body said.
Major chipmakers include Intel Corp (INTC.O), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.N), ASML (ASML.AS), Texas Instruments (TXN.N), National Semiconductor Corp (NSM.N), Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) and Samsung Electronics Co (005930.KS).
