April 17 (Reuters) - Telik Inc. (TELK.O) reported promising results from a mid-stage trial of its treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Shares of the company rose more than 10 percent to $6.50 in early morning trade on the Nasdaq.

The biopharmaceutical company said a combination of its drug Telcyta with carboplatin and paclitaxel improved survival in responding patients.

Paclitaxel and carboplatin are chemotherapy drugs used to treat some types of cancer.

Last December, Telik reported Telcyta failed to improve survival in patients with advanced lung cancer or in patients with ovarian cancer in a late-stage trial.
