UPDATE 1-American Medical Q3 profit beats Street; ups 2009 view

Nov 4 (Reuters) - American Medical Systems Holdings Inc (AMMD.O), a supplier of urological medical devices, posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by higher revenue from its men's health segment, and raised its 2009 forecast, sending its shares up 5 percent in extended trade.
The company now expects per-share adjusted earnings of $1.10 to $1.14, on sales of $509 million to $515 million, for 2009. Its prior forecast was earnings of $1.00 to $1.10 a share, on revenue of $495 million to $510 million.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of $1.06 a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $503.5 million for the year, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For the third quarter, the company reported a net income of $28.6 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with earnings of $3.5 million, or 5 cents a share, a year ago.
Excluding items, it earned 27 cents a share.
Revenue rose 5 percent to $123.2 million.
Analysts on average expected earnings of 20 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $116.8 million.
For the third quarter, revenue from men's health segment rose about 7 percent to $54.7 million.
Shares of the company were up 73 cents at $16.18 in after-market trade. They closed at $15.45 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
