* The United States Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to the Chrysler bankruptcy settlement, clearing the way for the sale of Chrysler's key assets to a group led by Fiat (FIA.MI).

* Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) and eight other large banks were deemed strong enough by federal regulators to return more than $68 billion in taxpayer aid.

* Because of the recession, Reed College in Oregon, known for academic rigor and a free-spirited student body, has had to make budget cuts and reject some needy applicants.

* Federal authorities obtained an indictment against a former chief executive of the accounting firm BDO Seidman on charges of conspiracy, fraud and lying to the Internal Revenue Service in connection with his work on questionable tax shelters sold to wealthy investors.

* Exposure to emerging markets, which have led a global rally, has paid off for some hedge fund managers.

* The Boston Newspaper Guild filed a complaint with federal regulators challenging a unilateral 23 percent pay cut and called on its owner, New York Times Co (NYT.N), to resume negotiations.

* In a sign that the government has stepped up its antitrust investigation of a class-action settlement between Google Inc (GOOG.O) and groups representing authors and publishers, the Justice Department has issued formal requests for information to several of the parties involved.

* Members of the Screen Actors Guild have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract with the major Hollywood studios, ending a nearly year-long standoff.

* German retailer Arcandor (AROG.DE) filed for bankruptcy after the government rejected its request for a loan guarantee of 650 million euros.
