Regulator seeks recall of Simplicity bassinets
(Reuters) - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has asked retailers worldwide to stop selling and recall 900,000 bassinets made by Pennsylvanian company Simplicity Inc, after two infants died due to strangulation.
The CPSC said the recall included Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible "Close-Sleeper" model bassinets.
On August 27, CPSC had issued a safety alert after SFCA Inc., the company which purchased all of Simplicity Inc's assets at public auction in April 2008, refused to cooperate with the government and recall the products saying it was not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity Inc.
The alert did not cover bassinets produced in recent months that have fabric permanently attached over the lower bar.
CPSC said six retailers have voluntarily agreed to recall the product and provide a refund or store credit to consumers who return the product to the store where purchased.
The stores include Wal-Mart, Toys"R"Us, Kmart Corp, Big Lots, Target and J.C. Penney.
