Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:47am EDT
TEHRAN, June 22 (Reuters) - Iran has diagnosed its first case of the H1N1 strain of flu, in a 16-year-old Iranian living in the United States, the official IRNA news agency reported on Monday.

"This person was subjected to tests upon entering the country with respiratory infection symptoms and in this test the contraction of (the flu) was confirmed," IRNA said, quoting a Ministry of Health statement.

It said the teenager was responding well to treatment. "The general situation of the patient is now satisfactory," IRNA said.

The World Health Organisation elevated the H1N1 strain to pandemic status earlier this month. (Reporting by Hashem Kalantari; writing by Fredrik Dahl; editing by Matthew Jones)
