-- Many commercial banks have raised the interest rates on Vietnamese dong deposits to 15 percent per year this week, from less than 12 percent last week, following the central bank's removal of the ceiling rate on dong deposits.

LAO DONG

-- A Vietnamese investor has been fined with 100 million dong ($6,235) for rigging stock prices, the State Securities Commission said. The man placed 107 sell orders of Sacombank STB.HM shares within three days in February with lowering prices, accounting for 13.32 percent of the market's sell orders that was influenced on the market index.

-- Foreign investors were key players on Vietnam's main exchange .VNI on Wednesday's trading session, buying 1.6 million shares worth 76.8 billion dong ($4.8 million), accounting for 68 percent of the market's trading value.

-- Nuiphaovica, a venture between Canada's Tiberon Minerals and two Vietnamese companies, would sign a $250-million credit contract with Fortis and Hypro Und Veriens banks on Friday to fund the exploration of the country's largest tungsten and fluorite mine in the northern province of Thai Nguyen.

-- Vietnam will not change its retail prices on petrol and oil products until June while prices after that would be discussed later, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said.

-- Japan's Uniden Corp (6815.T) said it would invest $45 million in a wireless telephone factory in Hanoi.

ECONOMIC AND GENERAL NEWS:

VIETNAM NEWS

-- The United States is the largest importer of Vietnam's furniture, buying 41 percent of its total exports, followed by Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and China. The Industry and Trade Ministry expects furniture exports to bring in $5.5 billion by 2010, from $3 billion forecast this year.

-- The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication group said it would provide telecoms services using the country's first satellite, Vinasat 1, from June.

LAO DONG

-- Market inspectors seized and destroyed 1.2 tonnes of Chinese chickens on Wednesday which were delivered by truck to Hanoi from the northern province of Bac Giang without proper documentation.

-- More than 58,000 tonnes of cement have been delivered from northern manufacturers to the southern region to ensure stable supplies and prices, the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation said.

-- Consumer prices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this month rise more than 20 percent from the same month last year, partly due to a rise in the cash circulation on the market, experts said.
