-- Foreign investors bought 12 million stocks on the main exchange .VNI on Wednesday, accounting for 15.26 percent of the total, while they sold 1.7 million shares, or 2.2 percent of the total.

-- The Asian Development Bank has lent $25 million to Sacombank STB.HM to help small and medium-sized enterprises gain better access to credit.

THOI BAO KINH TE VIETNAM

-- The Industry and Trade Ministry is not allowing top brewers Sabeco and Habeco to list shares now due to depressed stock markets.

-- Southern Bank has raised dong deposit rates on all terms by between 0.3 and 0.6 percentage point, offering 8.5 percent now for one-year deposits.

ECONOMIC AND GENERAL NEWS:

VIETNAM NEWS

-- Annual production of steel, estimated at 4.6 million tonnes this year, is likely to outpace demand, the Vietnam Steel Association said.

-- President Nguyen Minh Triet has opened the country's first branch of a U.S. school, Texas-based Houston Community College.

-- German police said they planned to deport more than 100 illegal immigrants from Vietnam in June.

-- At least four passengers, including two Vietnamese children, were admitted to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City for flu tests after showing symptoms of fever on their arrival at Tan Son Nhat Airport on Wednesday.

-- At least four people were killed in a fire at a Hanoi train station on Wednesday.

-- The Finance Ministry is proposing that taxpayers be exempt from income tax for the first half of the year.

-- On Wednesday, Dung Quat oil refinery, Vietnam's first such facility, started the production of 102-octane petrol reformate, a key component of commercial petrol. The refinery plans to market its gasoline products in June, Deputy Director Nguyen Hoai Giang said.

-- Six Vietnamese travellers including two children are being kept in quarantine in Hong Kong because of suspected flu, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
