HONG KONG, July 16 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs (GS.N) hired former Citigroup (C.N) veteran Kaven Leung as deputy head of Asia private wealth management, a memo said on Wednesday, as the bank builds its team catering to wealthy clients across the region.

Leung, who was at Citi for 21 years, will be based in Hong Kong and responsible for Goldman's wealth management business strategy and clients in Asia, excluding Japan, the internal memo says. He starts at the end of the summer.

While at Citi, Leung was in charge of around 2,000 private bankers from Australia to Hong Kong, Singapore to India. The bank last week announced his resignation as CEO of Asia-Pacific wealth management.

Asia's booming economy has created heavy demand for wealth management. Goldman in the last few years has bulked up its own Asia wealth group, as have other investment banks including Citi, UBS (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N) and HSBC (HSBA.L) (0005.HK) .
