Indonesia motorcycle sales seen down 20-28 pct -Astra Honda
JAKARTA, March 3 (Reuters) - Indonesia's total motorcycle sales are expected to drop 20-28 percent this year, an official at market leader Astra Honda Motor said on Tuesday, reflecting weaker consumer spending amid a global economic slowdown.
Astra Honda Motor, a unit of Indonesia's largest automotive distributor PT Astra International Tbk (ASII.JK), expects total motorcycle sales of between 4.5-5 million units in 2009, down from 6.215 million in 2008.
"It is a very difficult year to predict, the market hasn't shown any signs of improvement," marketing director Johannes Loman told Reuters in a phone interview.
He also said that Honda motorcycle sales are expected to fall by 17-27 percent to 2.1-2.4 million units, from 2.874 million in 2008.
The company has started to cut shifts and overtime in order to prevent large stocks from building up, he said. (Reporting by Andreas Ismar; Editing by Sara Webb)
