KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 (Reuters) - German carmaker Volkswagen's (VOWG.DE) chief executive has yet to make a date for talks with Malaysia's prime minister about the fate of a proposed tie-up with carmaker Proton (PROT.KL), an aide to the premier said on Monday.

Mergers & Acquisitions

The aide said Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had misspoken earlier in the day when he told reporters he was still waiting to hear from the Proton chief regarding an appointment.

Volkswagen had been seen as the frontrunner to partner loss-making Proton until last Friday, when a Singapore newspaper reported that the German firm had broken off the talks.

Volkswagen denied on Friday it had ended talks with the government, and a government source said the German firm's chief, Martin Winterkorn, wanted to meet the prime minister.
