Sharks capture Campbell in quiet start to trade deadline day
TORONTO (Reuters) - The San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars made the most significant moves in an otherwise quiet start to the NHL's trade deadline day.
The Sharks completed the first big deal by acquiring defenseman Brian Campbell from the Buffalo Sabres while the Stars, who are taking a run at the Detroit Red Wings and top spot in the Western Conference, grabbed Brad Richards from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Campbell, a mobile defenseman with five goals and 38 assists for the Sabres this season, had been coveted by several teams but goes to San Jose for young forward Steve Bernier and a first-round pick in the 2008 draft.
Richards waived a $7.8 million no movement clause to go to Dallas in a multi-player deal that saw backup netminder Johan Holmqvist join the Stars with forwards Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern and netminder Mike Smith going the other way to Tampa.
The Montreal Canadiens, who are among a number of teams hoping to land Atlanta Thrashers sniper Marian Hossa before the trade window closes at 1500 ET, pulled off a surprise move when they shipped number one netminder Cristobal Huet to the Washington Capitals for a 2009 second-round draft pick.
The St Louis Blues swapped defenseman Bryce Salvadore for Devils tough guy Cam Janssen while the Toronto Maple Leafs sent Wade Belak, one of the NHL's most feared fighters, to the Florida Panthers for a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft.
