LONDON (Reuters) - Total's Akpo oilfield project in Nigeria will start pumping oil in the winter of 2008-2009, the group's Exploration and Production chief said on Tuesday.

"Akpo should start up some time in 2009," Yves-Louis Darricarrere told a Global Reuters Energy Summit. "It should start some time in the winter 2008-2009," he added.

Chevron's Corp (CVX.N) Agbami oil field and Total's Akpo are the only major oil fields expected to come on-line this year in Nigeria, adding up 500,000 barrels per day to the country's output.

Total has a 24 percent stake in the Akpo project, which has a plateau output of 225,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
