BETHESDA, Maryland (Reuters) - American Jeff Overton clung to a one-shot lead over compatriot Tom Pernice midway through the third round of the AT&T National at steamy Congressional Country Club on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Overton, searching for his maiden victory on the PGA Tour, was at one-under after nine holes and stood at 10-under for the tournament.

Overton birdied the 455-yard par-four third but gave the stroke back with a bogey on six. He birdied the seventh to remain on top of the leaderboard on a hot and humid day in suburban Washington, D.C.

Pernice, 48, bogeyed the 518-yard, par-four sixth but birdied eight to remain at par for the day after nine holes and in the hunt for his third career title.

Americans Steve Stricker and Anthony Kim were in a tie for third at eight-under.

Holder K.J. Choi finished one-over for the day and was at even-par for the tournament, while U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate carded a 67 but was eight shots off the pace.
