Alain Robert says he has been arrested and fined more than 100 times for climbing skyscrapers around the world but on Tuesday Moscow's police released him after his climb once they had checked his identification papers were in order, news agencies reported.

Television pictures showed the longhaired Robert climbing up an exterior ladder on one corner of the 242 meter (794 feet) high Tower 2 of the Federation Tower while construction workers clapped and cheered his progress.

A spire on top of the as yet unfinished Tower 1 will take its height to 448 meters (1,470 feet) making it the tallest tower in Europe, its architects say.
