"I say to (Former British Prime Minister Tony) Blair's successor that the policy of your predecessor drew catastrophes in Afghanistan and Iraq and even in the centre of London," he said in a tape posted on a Web site used by al Qaeda-linked groups.

At least 40 messages have been broadcast by Osama bin Laden, Zawahri and their allies since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Following is a chronology of major statements attributed to Zawahri in the past year.

July 27 - Zawahri calls on Muslims to fight attacks on their countries.

September 29 - Zawahri calls U.S. President George W. Bush a "lying failure" for saying progress had been made in the war on terrorism.

December 20 - Zawahri says al Qaeda will continue to target Western countries so long as Muslims are under attack.

-- He also says elections would not free Palestinian land from Israeli occupation and any path other than holy war would lead to "loss and defeat".

December 31 - Zawahri calls on insurgents in Iraq to unite, and urges Palestinian Islamists not to cooperate with the Palestinian Authority.

-- He also hails any Muslim woman insisting on wearing the Islamic veil in the face of pressure in some Western countries.

Jan 22, 2007 - Zawahri mocks Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.

-- Feb 13 - Zawahri says in a Web statement that Bush's troop build-up in Iraq is a gamble bound to fail.

-- He also vows reprisals against Arab and Muslim countries that supported the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

March 11 - Zawahri says the leadership of Islamist group Hamas had surrendered to the Jews most of Palestine to keep heading the Palestinian government.

May 23 - Zawahri eulogizes Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month and urges his followers to continue his fight against U.S.-led forces.

June 25 - Zawahri urges all Muslims to support Hamas in its battles with President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel, which he said was planning to invade Gaza. He also criticized Hamas for taking part in 2006 elections and for signing up to a Saudi-brokered agreement to form a unity government.

July 4 - Zawahri talks about unity in jihad and calls for the overthrow of "corrupt" Muslim governments in a new video. He also talked about the corruption of the Saudi Arabian royal family, condemned Palestinian concessions to Israel and criticized the Egyptian government as an ally of United States.

July 10 - Zawahri threatens more attacks on Britain two weeks after failed bombings in London and Glasgow.
