PERIGUEUX, France (Reuters) - President Nicolas Sarkozy made clear he would support independence for Kosovo on Friday, telling a class of schoolchildren that they needed to get used to the idea of a newlook map of Europe.

"You'll need to change that, with Kosovo," Sarkozy told children in southwestern France, pointing to a map of Europe pinned to their classroom wall which showed Kosovo as part of Serbia.

Kosovo's leaders are expected to declare independence on Sunday despite opposition from Serbia and Russia. EU foreign ministers will discuss their response on Monday, with the major powers expected to recognize the new state rapidly.
