Intercell says JE vaccine phase II trial a success
VIENNA, April 15 (Reuters) - Austrian vaccine maker Intercell (ICEL.VI) said on Tuesday data from a phase II trial of its Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine have shown excellent results amongst children in endemic regions.
"The results fully support Intercell's development plan for endemic regions and pave the way towards late stage development and licensure -- planned for late 2009 / early 2010," the company said in a statement.
Intercell wants the vaccine to be licensed for use in children in India and other parts of South East Asia with its Indian partner Biological E Ltd. Phase III clinical trials in India are planned for the end 2008/early 2009.
Novartis AG (NOVN.VX) has a marketing and distribution agreement for the new vaccine for the United States, Europe and other markets in Asia and Latin America with Intercell.
With over 3 billion people living in endemic areas, mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis is the leading cause of childhood encephalitis and viral encephalitis in Asia. (Reporting by Sylvia Westall)
