LONDON, June 1 (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L), the world's second-largest drugmaker, said on Monday that its Lamictal XR epilepsy drug had been approved in the United States.

Lamictal XR extended release is approved as add-on therapy for adult and adolescent patients who experience partial seizures.

The original version of Lamictal has lost patent protection, pressuring profits, but Glaxo hopes to replace some lost sales with the new tablet.

At 1300 GMT Glaxo shares were flat, underperforming the FTSE 100 .FTSE index which was up 1.2 percent. (Reporting by Ben Deighton, editing by Will Waterman)
