(Reuters) - British actress Deborah Kerr died on Tuesday, her agent said on Thursday. She was 86.
Here are some key facts.
* Deborah Kerr was born Deborah Jane Kerr Trimmer on September 30, 1921 in Helensburgh, Scotland and became one of Britain's most famous actresses achieving international stardom when she moved to Hollywood in 1947.
* Originally trained for the ballet, she moved into stage acting and gained some experience in theatre, before moving to films.
* The star landed her breakthrough screen role in 1940, as a frightened Salvation Army worker in the all-star adaptation of the satire, "Major Barbara".
* However, it was her work in three separate roles in the Michael Powell-Emeric Pressburger "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp", as the various women in the hero's life, that brought her recognition.
* In a famous scene with actor Burt Lancaster she committed adultery in the surf in the film "From Here to Eternity" (1953). Several memorable films followed. She was Oscar nominated again for "The King and I" (1956). "Heaven Knows, Mr Allison" (1957) gained yet another Oscar nomination.
* She starred with Cary Grant in "An Affair to Remember" (1957) and received a fifth Oscar nomination for "Separate Tables" (1958), and "The Sundowners" (1960) brought yet another Academy nomination.
* She was nominated six times for Best Actress Oscar but did not actually win.
* In 1964 she made "The Night of the Iguana" and her salary had risen to $250,000.
* She retired from the screen after "The Arrangement" (1969) and though in the early 1980s she appeared on television, it wasn't until 1985 that she re-emerged on the screen to give a poignant performance in her last film, "The Assam Garden".
* She was awarded an Honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards in the early 1990s in recognition of the "perfection, discipline and elegance" of her screen work.
