(adds boy killed)
GAZA, Feb 19 Israeli soldiers shot and killed a 10-year-old boy and a Palestinian militant in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Palestinian medical workers and militant groups said.
A Hamas official said the boy was killed by Israeli troops operating near the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis. An Israeli army spokeswoman said Israeli troops clashed with militants in the area, but said the army was unaware of a child being hit.
The militant, affiliated with the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was shot earlier as he tried to plant an explosive device along the border with Israel, the militant group said.
The army said the Palestinian had opened fire on troops from across the border fence in central Gaza.
"The soldiers returned fire and hit him," the army said.
Israel frequently carries out raids against militants in the coastal enclave in what it says is an effort to stop militants from firing rockets into southern Israeli towns and planting explosives along the border that target its soldiers.
