Spain arrests suspected double agent
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain has arrested a suspected double agent believed to have sold state secrets to a foreign intelligence agency between 2001 and 2004, the National Intelligence Agency (CNI) said on Tuesday.
CNI head Alberto Saiz held a news conference on the arrest but declined to identify the country involved. Local media quoted government sources as saying it was Russia.
Roberto Florez Garcia, arrested in Tenerife, the Canary Islands, on Monday, sold the identity of Spanish spies and other information about the intelligence agency from 2001 until he left the service in 2004, a CNI spokesman said.
But no information about Spain's counter-terrorism fight or information which could damage the security of the European Union or NATO was revealed. "National security has not been at risk," local radio quoted Saiz as saying.
Florez Garcia had been under investigation since 2005 and could face up to 12 years in jail if tried and found guilty.
News of his arrest coincides with a rough patch for Western relations with Russia.
Britain and Russia have made tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats following Moscow's refusal to extradite a man wanted for the murder in London of a former Russian spy and Kremlin critic.
