Two policemen shot dead in Russia's south

Sun May 25, 2008 10:35am EDT
MAKHACHKALA, Russia, May 25 (Reuters) - Two senior policemen have been shot dead in separate incidents in Russia's North Caucasus region, local interior ministry spokesmen said on Sunday.

A senior policeman from the interior ministry's economic crimes department was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday by unidentified men in the centre of Dagestan's main city, Makhachkala, a spokesman for the local interior ministry said.

In the Kabardino-Balkaria region, a policeman from the organised crime department was shot dead at a car wash on Saturday night when attackers sprayed his car with bullets from a passing car. A guard at the car wash was also killed.

Russia has fought two wars against rebels in Chechnya since 1994, scarring the north Caucasus region and killing thousands of people. The violence has spilt over into neighbouring regions where crime and poverty are widespread. (Writing by Guy Faulconbridge, editing by Elizabeth Piper)
