Rain suspends play for the day in Paris

PARIS (Reuters) - Rain brought an early end to the day's action at the French Open on Tuesday.

Three-times defending champion Rafael Nadal was tied at 1-1 in the first set with Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci when the courts were covered for the final time at 1745 GMT on the third day of the claycourt grand slam.

A downpour delayed the start of play by almost three hours. After the showers relented for 90 minutes, allowing only Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina to reach the second round, another three-hour interruption occurred.

The second dry window enabled Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo and Russian Nikolay Davydenko to be among only 13 winners on a day when 72 first-round matches had been scheduled.

The weather has blighted the tournament for the second day running as only 25 of 56 matches were completed on Monday.
