NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Hall of Fame Game is to be scraped because of scheduling problems, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday.

The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres will play the last exhibition game that has been a Cooperstown tradition since 1940 when they meet at the quaint Doubleday Field on June 16.

"Given the complexities of the Major League schedule and all its inherent challenges, it has become increasingly difficult in recent years to find a suitable date and make the proper arrangements for two clubs to participate in the Hall of Fame Game during the regular season," said Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's president and chief operating officer.

"Since 1940 the Hall of Fame Game has been a unique part of the baseball calendar, and one that has been greatly enjoyed," he said on the league Web site (www.mlb.com).

The Cubs played in the first Hall of Fame Game in 1940 and will be making their seventh appearance in the classic while the Padres will take the field for the third time.
