LONDON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The British government has given the green light for a 750 megawatt offshore wind farm to be built off the North Wales coast.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change said on Wednesday the Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm, together with three other nearby wind farms off the North Wales coast, will provide enough electricity to power 680,000 homes.

The wind farm comprises 250 turbines and will be developed by RWE (RWEG.DE) subsidiary npower renewables.

"It brings the total offshore projects with planning approval to 4.5 GW, solidifying UK's position as leader in offshore wind energy. It will also set us well on our way towards reaching our 2020 renewable energy targets," said a spokesperson for the British Wind Energy Association in a statement.

There are two wind farms already up and running off the North Wales coast, including North Hoyle with 30 turbines and Burbo with 25.
