ZURICH, July 3 (Reuters) - Switzerland's competition watchdog said on Friday it would start an in-depth review of a planned merger between media groups Tamedia (TAMN.S)> and Edipresse (EDI.S).

The merger is set to create one of Switzerland's biggest media groups, controlling leading newspapers such as "Tages-Anzeiger" and "Le Matin" as well as television and radio channels.

"The preliminary review is pointing to a possible creation of a dominant position, or the strengthening of such a position, on the market (for free newspapers) for commuters in the French-speaking part of Switzerland," the antitrust regulator said in a statement.
