BERLIN (Reuters) - Carmaker Daimler AG and utility RWE plan to open recharging stations for electric autos in Berlin from the end of next year, company officials said on Friday.

"This is a pilot market and more will follow. Then we will see how this does in practice," RWE Chief Executive Juergen Grossmann told reporters.

The densely populated Ruhr industrial area could be another candidate for recharging stations, as more electric vehicles make it onto German streets.

Daimler plans a limited production run of electric Smart minicars equipped with lithium-ion batteries from late 2009. Serial production of the vehicle is set to start from 2012 at the latest.
